From dated to darling! A simple DIY table makeover

Hey friends, I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's weekend!

So I wrote a post a few weeks back asking you what color would you paint this vintage side table I scored for $40 at an estate sale.

    Simple DIY table makeover

The original brown color made the piece feel , plus it wasn't in the best condition.

Painting the table black was the majority vote here on the blog and on Instagram. A big thank you to all my friends who weighed in!

    Here's where we started...

And, this is where we ended!

She is no longer dull and dated but a darling table that I love!

Wait, I know what you're thinking, that's not black! While I agree with y'all that this table would be a stunner in black. I felt a lighter paint treatment would compliment my home better.

I used Rustoleum's oil-based enamel paint in smoke gray, which turned out to have a blue undertone {clearly that works for me}.

This was my first time working with an oil-based paint, so I was a little nervous about the outcome. However, from everything I read, I knew an oil-based paint was the best option for that durable finish and high gloss lacquered look I was after.

    Table with primer only.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing to work with oil-based paints:

*Oil-based paints have very strong fumes! You absolutely need to use it in a well ventilated area.

*Oil-base paints takes longer to dry. Which can be a pro or a con depending on your needs. Longer drying time means more time to work with the paint, but you have to wait at least 24 hours to apply a second coat even under the best circumstances. I waited over a week because it was too cold to even attempt a second coat.

*Clean up will be a little bit more involved with oil-based paints. You will need some type of solvent for clean up like paint thinner or turpentine. I personally purchased a mid range brush, knowing I would probably chuck it after I was done with this table.

I'm happy to report after a coat of primer and two coats of paint, the finish look is everything I was after! I really thought I was going to have all sorts of brush strokes but nope, all I have is a beautiful glossy finish.

    Just look at that reflection!?

The gold claw feet detail was achieved by using gold spray paint, it adds the perfect touch of bling {and if you couldn't already tell, I love me some bling}!

    Painted End Table160211-2

I shared a photo on Instagram, of how some of the gold lifted off when I removed the painters tape I use to protect it as I painted the table.

It was nothing a little rub n buff  {I also used it to update the base of the lamp on the table, it was wood before} couldn't fix,  but now I know its a good idea to wait at least 24 hours before using painters tape on anything I've spray painted!

I'm over the moon with the results! The color works beautifully with my existing decor and adds just the fun pop of color I was after without being over the top!

    Painted End Table160211-18

It's great when a piece is pretty and functional! The durable finish means I don't have to cringe when the kids {or parents LOL} accidentally spill or knock something into the table!

Plus even with my decor,  there is still plenty of room to place a drink and such when I'm relaxing with a magazine or watching TV.

So what do you think, did I make the right decision in your opinion? Or would you have gone with the majority vote of painting it black?

Hey Vin! You know it was lucky that I love blue and already have a lot of it in my house because the color is technically gray! I hope you find your own bling on wheels soon! 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!
