Hey friends! Last week it dawned on me that I needed to paint the front before I could take photos for the One Room Challenge reveal tomorrow.
So I asked you guys for your opinion on paint my front door black.
You answered with a resounding YES!
Our front door was red on both sides. And while the exterior side looked great with the colors going on outside.
Red on the interior side though… Not so much.
My decor has lots of blues and whites with other pops of color thrown into the mix. A red door just doesn’t work.
So with the encouragement of my awesome readers, I took the plunge and painted the inside of my front door black.
Sherwin Williams Iron Ore to be exact. And I love it!!!
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, it never cease to amaze me what a difference paint can make!

I also took down the peel and stick “stained glass”. The little bit of privacy it provided wasn’t worth living with it.
This was a very simple weekend project, even for me who never painted a door before.
Here is a photo of the tools I used.
If I was painting a door again, I would go with a 4″ foam roller instead of the 6″ roller because it was a little long.
After hubby taped the door. We slid a piece of cardboard under the door, that way we can paint the bottom part of the door without worrying about paint getting on the floor.
Sorry for the crappy iPhone photos y’all, but the information is still good :).
I used the 2″ inch angled brush to paint the panel insets and any spot too tight for the roller brush, like around the doorknobs.
Then I used the 6″ foam roller brush to paint the rest of the door. Using the foam roller will help give you a smooth finish.
I did 2 coat of Sherwin Williams Iron Ore in a semi-gloss finish and waited about 2 hours in between coats. To help speed up the drying time I used a fan.
The next day I took the painters tape down and used the razor scraper to clean off any paint that got on the glass.
I can’t even explain how much I love the black painted door!
The color I used, Sherwin Williams Iron Ore is perfect. It reads as a very soft black. However, it’s actually dark gray.
Even the kids were impressed with the new color 😄
I still have more work to do in the entryway {rug, bench, art, etc…}, but for now, I will enjoy my new black front door and be grateful the red is gone!
A big thank you to everyone who chimed in, it really gave me the courage to paint the front door black, and I’m so glad I did!
OOOh! I have the SAME brick red/maroon door issue and I’ve been wanting to paint the inside of the door a soft black. Thanks for the photos and visual validation! Yours looks so great! 🙂 Excited to make this change in our home, too!
I Love the curtains by the couch. Target has some similar, but where are yours from? Love the Iron Ore front door too!
I love the new color on the door! Made a big difference.
I am looking to paint my interior doors the same color, what brand of semi gloss paint did you use? Looks so good!
Linda,
Love The black door! Great choice! What is the paint color on your entry and living room walls? Love your style!!!
Hi Deb, the color is Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. I appreciate you taking the time to visit!
I love it. Well done Linda
Thanks Ann 😄!
Love it! I may need to copy this idea.
I think you should paint the outside of the door too. I like the red shutters, but i think a black door would look better. Tie in the light fixture and emphasize the door/entry area.
(and really sorry about the capitalization. I can’t turn it off!)
You totally should Lisa! I’ve never painted a door before, but the black is very forgiving because “mistakes” don’t stand out as much.
Thanks for the suggestion on painting the exterior side of the door, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.
Don’t worry about the capitalization, I realized it was a setting on my end and should be fixed now.
I’m curious… did you paint the outside as well?
I did not Jamala, because the shutters are also that same red color. Although Lisa made a good point below, about the black door standing out. It’s definitely something to think about.
It looks awesome! I love it! It Made a magnificent impact..
Thanks Jamala! It has made the biggest difference. Even my husband who wasn’t as gung-ho about the black as I was, loved the outcome!
