Hey friends! Today I'm sharing a blog post that's a little different from what I normally share. When I got an email from my friend Brynne of The Gathered Home to participate in this amazing giving back blog hop, I was so touched with this amazing idea she had to share our favorite charity.
If you are coming from Jessica's at House Homemade, welcome! I'm so glad your here.
Today I want to share a charity that is very near and dear to my heart, Compassion International. Compassion is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children {and their families} battling poverty through sponsorships. Before we ever considered sponsoring a child we heard great things about Compassion from friends, members of our church, and even from bloggers I was following at the time.
Since 2013 my family and I have sponsored a child from Haiti through Compassion. The $38 we give each month to Compassion provides our sponsored child Stevenson with benefits ranging from educational opportunities to health care that he {and other sponsored children} would otherwise never have access to.
Equally as important the sponsor and child can exchange letters providing hope and encouragement.

I was born in Haiti in an area wrought with poverty like many of these Children waiting to be sponsored. It was extreme good fortune that I had family here in the United States that was kind enough to open their homes and heart to me. Giving me the opportunity to grow in an environment that allowed me to flourish. It is really from the compassion of others that I'm even in a position to write this post.
Above is my passport photo when I came to the United States. I look at my face and the face of the young Haitian girls in the picture below and I know I could easily have been any of them. Enduring hardships no child should ever know.

The sad truth is the majority of these children won't be so fortunate to have someone come swoop them away. However, sponsoring a child through Compassion can provide hope where there is none and really make an immeasurable impact in the lives of these children. At least 80% of every dollar you give goes directly to the program activities that directly benefit these children.
I understand it can be hard to know what charitable organizations to support with your time and money. I would like to invite you to explore Compassion International further by visiting Compassion's website, or contacting them directly with any question you may have {they strive for transparency}.
I think one thing most of us can agree on is that the holiday season is a time for giving. Compassion offers us an amazing way to reach out and bless children who have so little through our giving. If you have kids this is wonderful way to teach them about kindness, generosity, and appreciation for the things they do have {of course we adults also benefit from these great lessons}.

Oh Linda! Such a beautiful post - thank you so much for sharing what makes this cause so special to you! We have several Compassion kids we "adopted" right after we got married - although we don't write letters as often as we should, it's such a neat ministry! I'm so glad you were able to join in this hop and share your story!

What a wonderful way to give back to the country you were born in for those who aren't as lucky as you are. I hope we can all make a difference with this blog hop and warm the hearts of our readers to try to make a difference of their own. Happy Holidays Linda.

Linda- you're so courageous to share your story and photo. $38 a month can really make a difference in the quality of life for a child, and it's such a small amount to donate each month.

wow, linda- what a great cause, and something so personal for you. that photo of you, like you said, shows your hardships. that expression is too serious for a child that age. i am so glad you had opportunities for change, and that you've shared this organization which helps in doing the same for others.
