Our bed is where we start and end each day so why not make it beautiful and comfortable right?
I'm sharing how to make a bed beautifully and quickly in 6 easy steps.
Taking the time to make your bed every day is one of those small things that can have a big impact on how your room looks and feel.

Do you know how to make a bed properly?
In the past, my answer would've been "of course!". And by, of course. I mean, of course, I know how to pull my comforter/duvet over my wrinkled sheets and throw my pillows on top of it.
That was truly the extent of my bed-making knowledge.
While I've always loved how beautifully the beds were made in some of my favorite catalogs and magazines.
I would think who has time to make their bed like this every day. That is until I learned how to make a bed properly. And realize it doesn't take much time at all to make my bed as pretty as a designer bed.
The quality of your bed linens will also impact how your bed looks.
I'm a thrifty girl through and through. But when it comes to buying bedding I think it's worth it to invest in the best quality you can afford. After all, we do spend a ⅓ of our lives sleeping.
How To Make A Bed Properly and Quickly
1. Fitted Sheet
Start with your fitted sheet, making sure to pull all 4 corners down taut to ensure your fitted sheet is as smooth as possible.
2. Flat Sheet
Lay down your flat sheet over the fitted sheet right side down. So if your flat sheet has a design on it like mine, it should be facing down {you'll see why in step 4}.
Tuck the sheet corners at the foot of the bed using hospital corners. Be sure to smooth out wrinkles as you go.
3. Duvet Cover/ Comforter
Layer on your Duvet cover or comforter over your flat sheet, making sure the top corners line up with the top corners of the flat sheet.
4. The Sheet Fold Over
Fold over your duvet cover/comforter. Next, fold your flat sheet over the comforter fold.
Now you can see why we put our flat sheet right side facing down in step 2, so when we fold our sheet over the design or pattern will now be facing up.
5. Add Your Pillows
Some people like their beds piled up with pillows and others not so much. There is really no wrong or right way. Just do what looks good to you.
I like the less is more approach myself. And this is the setup I usually go with.
- Two euro shams and 2 standard size pillows as a base.
- If you have a king-size bed use 3 euro shams, and 2 king size pillows.
Next, I layer on 1-3 decorative accent pillows.
They are great for bringing in pops of color, texture, or seasonal flair {think Christmas or Valentine pillows}. Play around with this part and see what looks good to you.
These 3 accent pillow arrangements {pictured below} are my go-to's for finishing off a bed beautifully.
- A single lumbar pillow in a bright color or fun pattern.
- Two 18"x18" or 20"x 20" decorative throw pillows in a pretty pattern or solid color.
- A combination of both the lumbar pillow and the decorative throw pillows. Make sure the pillow fabrics compliment each other.
6. Throw Blanket
Adding a cozy throw at the foot of your bed is a nice finishing touch when making your bed. It's also another easy way to bring in more texture and color. Especially if your bedding is mostly neutral.
Plus they come in handy during those times when you want to relax in bed without completely undoing the whole thing.
Taking a few minutes to make your bed each day will make your room feel more inviting and relaxing.
Once you get used to this method, it will take no time at all!
It takes me only around 10 minutes to make my bed in the morning and it really is a great way to start my day.
{I need all the little wins I can get in a day.}
In the interest of full disclosure, there are days most specifically the weekends. When our family is in chill mode. I don't make my bed exactly like this.
Yet, I still do make my bed {it's a must for me}. Our Master bedroom is on the ground floor, so on the weekends, we all hang in there.
You can see how I usually make my bed on the weekends in my master bedroom decor update post!
Now to figure out how to suppress the urge to slide in between those cozy layers and take a little cat nap like Magnolia every time I make the bed haha.
Thanks for stopping by, see you next time!

Linda, what a gorgeous bedroom! We gave ours a makeover a year ago and it still looks new and fresh. (It was *very* old and tired!) Like your gorgeous room, it now looks like something out of a Pottery Barn catalog or home decor magazine. Never again will I wait soooo long to refresh a room!
Linda P. says
Thank you Jean! I know I can't believe we waited over a decade to make out bedroom!
