Office Guest Bedroom Layout | ORC Week 3

Figuring out the office guest bedroom layout was one of the many challenges I faced this week. But, there were also some wins!

Catch up with the previous weeks using the links below.

     Week 1 & 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Reveal

    One-Room-Challenge

    Office Guest Bedroom Layout

I knew figuring out the room layout would be challenging because I'm trying to get a lot of furniture in here so it can function well as both an office and guest bedroom.

While the room is a nice size, 16 x 12.5.  I don't want it to look crowded when it's all said and done.

After measuring the room and all the big piece of furniture. I used this online room planner tool to virtually plan the room layout.

After spending an ungodly amount of time virtually arranging and rearranging furniture. I  finally came up with a room layout I'm happy with!

This layout will treat the daybed as a giant sofa, with an Ikea tulip table and my existing bamboo chair right in front of it.

My current desk is not very big. So the tulip table {Ikea Docksta table} will be perfect as an extra work surface. While still leaving lots of "breathing room".

Speaking of the tulip table.  I'm having such a hard time getting my hands on one and it's making me a little nervous.

My local Ikea is out of stock and doesn't know when they are getting more in. I found 2 used online, but neither seller has responded to my inquiries.

    Sigh...

Office Guest Room Mood Board Update

Looking at the room layout you may notice some of the furniture from the mood board I shared last week isn't on there.

Well, I thought I would have plenty of closed storage for my office stuff using the closet.

    Yeah about that...

After spending most of the day on Sunday working on cleaning the room up {more on that in a minute} it was clear I underestimated the amount of "stuff" we have. Just the extra lamps alone took but about 40% of the closet space. {which I shared in my Instagram stories}.

It became clear I needed more functional storage and those white Ikea Vittsjo shelves I planned on putting on either side of my desk wasn't going to cut it. So a "fun" trip to return them to Ikea is on my to do list.

I still plan on using my vintage bamboo shelf, but the baskets are no longer necessary either.

Because... I'll have plenty of closed storage in this new to me vintage Dixie dresser I purchased on FB marketplace for only $100!

I was so excited when I found this piece because the size is perfect and it's in excellent condition! The drawers are smooth with wonderful dovetail construction {which makes for a more sturdy piece}.

Just look at the beautiful flower detail and ornate hardware!

I'm hoping it looks something like this when I'm done painting it.

Although, I'm unsure if I will use all of the existing hardware.

As I shared earlier, I spent most of Sunday purging and cleaning out as much stuff as I could from the office guest bedroom.

Now, my body wasn't very happy with me the next day, but my wallet was!

I was able to make almost $200 selling a bunch of stuff that was just collecting dust. That money covered the cost of the dresser and new rug with change left over!

    ORC Fall 2018 Before

I still have a bit more cleaning and purging left to do, but I'm happy with how much progress I made so far.

You guys I seriously forgot how big this room was!

Seeing it cleaner than I had in months made me even more excited about the makeover.

Most of the pieces left in the room are staying in here, so it's actually more progress than it may seem LOL.

Oh, the rug I mentioned is 5 ½ x 9, and I got it for $65 dollar at a local antique mall.

It needs to be cleaned, but other than that it's in great condition.

I just love the colors! Pink, brown, coral, light blue, navy blue, and touches of green on a cream background makes for a very pretty but sophisticated mix.

    To Do This Week

    • Finish cleaning room of unneeded items
    • Start working on dresser {fix any chips, sand, and prime}
    • Paint bamboo shelf
    • Paint desk top {it's currently covered with markers and paint courtesy of Kayla}
    • Source curtains and hardware
    • Put together daybed
    • Start arranging furniture
    • Go to Ikea for returns and to look for tulip table
    • Drink wine 😆

As you can see my list is pretty ambitious this week. If I get most of it done, next weeks update should show some dramatic improvements in the office guest bedroom makeover!

Stop by the ORC blog to see what all of the other Guest Participants are planning for their makeover!

I'm so new to all this so this may just sound dumb, but I always wondered how you could shop your house and all that, but that's because you collect things.Makes sense now. Everything I own I use if not used for a while I donate, yet I have seen what you can do with paint and I've changed my mind. I like your style otherwise I wouldn't be following you so I can't wait to see your office/guestroom space. So keep the inspiration coming and maybe I will actually learn to sand and paint items and try to see the potential they have hidden within them and not just see things that I don't want anymore. Take care and good luck with that list.
