I've decided to join the One Room Challenge again! This time I will be turning my neglected spare bedroom into an office guest room combo!

It's One Room Challenge {ORC} time again!
If you're not familiar, The One Room Challenge is a biannual event hosted by Linda from Calling It Home. Where 20 featured designers and guest participants like myself completely makeover a room in 6 weeks.
All of the guest participants share a weekly progress update each Thursday leading up to the big reveal!
This will be my 4th ORC makeover! Although this time it's a little different because I'm jumping into this ORC a week behind {so now I only have 5 weeks}.
Here’s a quick look at the rooms I’ve completed for previous One Room Challenge seasons:
Fall 2016: Master Bedroom Makeover
Spring 2017: Dining Room Turned Office
Spring 2018: Living & Dining Room
Office Guest Bedroom Before
As you can see this will be my second time tackling an office. Unlike my dining room office for the spring 2017 ORC, this room will also have to serve as a guest bedroom.
For the past 9 months, I've been using this room as a catchall space. Anything I didn't have a spot for was thrown into this room.
Ok, so I'm even more embarrassed to show you guys these before photos than the before of our living & dining room {and they where bad}.
Alright here goes nothing... {peeks between fingers}.
You guys it's sooo bad! I'm practically one step away from being on the Hoarders TV show.
This room is so daunting to me because there's really nowhere else to put the stuff that's in here.
I'm going to have to get rid of somethings {I purged A TON before we moved here in January by the way} so this is going to hurt.
However, the holiday season is on upon us, which means guests!
So I need to get my rear in gear and tackle this room once and for all, and as usual, the ORC is just the push I needed.
Now on to the good stuff!
Design Direction:
After spending pretty much all day and night on Pinterest yesterday gathering inspiration.
I decided I want the room to feel fresh, feminine, and layered. Like these beautiful spaces!
Here is the mood board I whipped up just yesterday to show the design direction I'm going in.
Since I just decided only 2 days ago to throw my hat into the ring for this ORC {a week late mind you} this is not something I budgeted for.
So, I will be mostly shopping my house for this makeover, which will be challenging but in a good way.
The room is a decent size 16 x 13.5, so it shouldn't feel overcrowded.
As you can see by my lazy photoshop job, I have most of the big pieces already and plenty of accessories.
So I should be able to do this makeover on my very small budget.
Just like the living and dining room makeover, I did for the spring ORC. There will be no major renovations, just cleaning up, organizing, and decorating :).
The walls are already painted Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams which is a great backdrop for the look I'm going for, so no painting is required either {YAY!}.
Here's what I will need to purchase:
- Ikea Vittsjo shelves in white x2 {to go on either side of my desk}
- Rug {I already sourced a vintage one for $65. I'm hoping to pick it up this weekend}
- Curtains and hardware
- Wicker baskets
- Bedding
- Round Ikea table {I'm hoping to score this second hand}
Here are the projects I will tackle:
- Purging, purging, and more purging
- Painting my faux bamboo shelves gold
- Customizing store-bought curtains
- Customizing inexpensive frames and curtain hardware
- Possible table makeover if I can score one second hand

So what do you think friends?! I'm so excited at the idea of having a dedicated workspace again and a space where guests can relax and feel comfortable.
And, believe it or not, I'm equally as excited for the challenge of doing this makeover mostly using things I already own!
This coming week I will be working on cleaning out the room some, and scouring Craigslist, FB marketplace, and second stores for that white round table so be sure to check back!
Stop by the ORC blog to see what all of the other Guest Participants are planning for their makeover!

We had the same exact bamboo-looking wood chair. I bought it years ago and kept updating it with new fabric, cushions and pillow. We finally sold it when we downsized to our condo. Now I don't have an extra room, anywhere! Looking forward to seeing it when it's completed!
Linda P. says
Hey Carol! Aren't those chairs great! I've really been hoping to find another one but no luck yet.
You know sometimes having just the amount of space you need is a good thing!

I have a spare room that was one of my daughters( we have been empty nesters for 12 years). This room has turned into my hoader room . I just don’t know what to do with this “stuff”. My husband has been suggesting cleaning it out . Boy, it is a challenge. Good luck getting rid of the excess! Can’t wait to see your room done. You are challenging me to get mine cleaned up. .
Linda P. says
Sally, it's so hard to get rid of stuff once it piles up right?! I was able to sell a bunch of stuff this week on Facebook marketplace and while it was hard at first. Once the pieces started selling and the room started looking cleaner it felt good.
So maybe you can start small with selling or donating a few pieces and see how you feel.
