Hey friends! I hope everyone had a good weekend!
I haven't shared a before and after post for operation home organization {O.H.O} since Kayla's closet makeover. So I'm extra excited to share with you our now organized mudroom! Also there's a source list at the end.
When we found this house one of the spaces I was most excited about was this mudroom area that you come into from the garage. Having two school age kids I loved having a dedicated space to dump put coats, shoes, book bags, etc...
Although I was over the moon with just having a mudroom, there were a few changes I wanted to make.
Number one on the list was changing the yellow walls. With very little natural light {almost none unless I have the laundry room door open} the color made the space feel very closed in and dark.
We painted it Sherwin Williams repose gray and it made such a huge difference! I love the lighter brighter feel.
I really wish I could have painted the mudroom bench also, but since we're renting it wasn't possible.
To make better use out of these upper cubbies {that I'm a little vertically challenged to reach comfortably}, I added wire baskets that I spray painted gold. Now I can easily "tiptoe grab" a basket, put what I want in it and slide it back into place.
Although we have the built-in mudroom bench it wasn't functional for the kids because of the height.
They would have to climb up to reach the hooks, and you can guess the end result... Nothing got hung up, unless I did it.
So I decided to add some hooks at a height the kids can easily reach.
I also added two easily accessible baskets, for things like gloves, hats, glasses, etc... To help keep the clutter at bay. They are basic metal baskets intended for bathroom storage that I spray painted black.
I could've used the drawers in the mudroom bench for this. But, i've come to realize kids are more likely to actually put things in the right place, if it's right in their face.
To combat the growing piles of shoes that we would so often trip over as we walked into the house. I added one of the two Ikea's Hemnes shoe cabinet we already owned to this space.
While the mudroom bench has basket for shoes, they really did not hold enough.
To jazz it up a bit, I replace the knobs with these cute number ones I found at HomeGoods.
I also used some marble contact paper to cover the top.
The brass change holder is a recent $2 estate sale find.
I can't say enough how much I love this mirror! I originally got it for Kayla's big girl room makeover, but ended up not using it. It works perfectly in this space!
Another one of my favorite additions to the mudroom is our paper "drop zone". Each of the kids have their own basket to put their school papers when they get home. The other basket is for hubby and I to drop off the mail.
This systems helps eliminate piles of paper on the table or the kitchen island.
A pin board keeps important and time sensitive papers visible.
A few accessories helps finish up the space.
With school starting in less than 4 weeks, I'm so glad to have this area organized! It may never look this neat again, but at least I got these pictures to look back on LOL.
I hope this mudroom makeover gave you some ideas to get your family organized!
