Hey friends! One of the best part of the holiday season is spending time with family and friends. Most of the time you'll probably make plans to entertain at home ahead of time.
But, what do you do when your living room is a bit of a mess "lived in" {like mine in the pictures below ?}, and you just found out you have guests dropping by shortly? Well I got your covered! I'm going to share with you how you can get your living room fresh, tidy, and ready for guests quickly.
This is how my living room looks honestly a lot of the time because it is the hub of our home. When I need to get it clean and tidy quickly I use these steps and my go to secret weapon {more on that later}.
How to Quick Clean Your Living Room
Before you get started, open up some windows or a door {even if you have to put on a sweater}. Like I said in my spring cleaning post, a little bit of fresh air will do wonders for your home.
Clear the clutter
Go around the room clearing away obvious clutter like remote controls, electronic devices, books, toys, etc... These are the type of things that make your living space appear much messier than it probably really is.
Have a basket handy to collect things that can't be put away quickly for the time being. You can go through it later and put those things away in their proper place later.
*Tip - One of the tricks I use in my house to help keep the "kid clutter" at bay in our living room, is what we call "pick up baskets". Both of the kids have a basket that we keep on the stairs. We use them to corral toys and other kid related items that belongs upstairs but has made it's way downstairs. At the end of the day they bring them to their rooms and put everything away. The baskets then go back on the stairs for next time.
Dust and wipe down
Once you've corralled the clutter, quickly wipe down your hard surfaces {TV's, shelves, etc..} using a piece of cloth or duster. For your coffee table I suggest using a damp cloth or moisten cleaning wipes to get rid of things like fingerprints, food stains, etc...
At this point, your living room should look considerably cleaner already!
Clean your sofa and other soft furnishings {like pillows}
I know you're probably like, wait what?! I thought this a quick cleaning guide! Well it is, and this is where my secret weapon I told you about earlier comes in!
I first shared how I use Scotch-Brite lint rollers religiously when I posted my tips on how I keep my white slipcover clean with kids and a cat.
Scotch-Brite 50% Stickier Lint Rollers is my go to secret weapon for picking up large messes such as crumbs, pet hair, and lint of my light colored slipcovered sectional and pillows. That one simple step immediately makes them look cleaner.
I even use my lint roller on my curtains and lampshades {especially the black ones in my bedroom}!
My lint roller has also been a god send for cleaning up my tree skirt now that I have a flocked Christmas tree.
I use the 8" version to quickly clean up larger pieces like my sectional.
For smaller job like pillows or lampshades I like to use the classic version.
Now that we have "cleaned" our sofa and pillows, straighten the sofa cushions and fluff the pillows. If you have throws laying around be sure to fold them or drape them neatly over the back of the couch.
*Tip - Throws are also great for covering up stains or an old worn sofa.
Tackle the floors
If time permits grab your vacuum and give the floor a quick once over. However if you don't have time don't sweat it. Most people's attention will be focused on things like the sofa where they are sitting, and tables where they will most likely sit their drink and food rather than the floor.
Just be sure pick up any obviously large ball of pet hair and dust bunnies.
Ok so in a pinch, I've even used my Scotch-Brite™ lint roller on the rug {don't judge me LOL}
That's it your done! All of the steps should have taken you less than 30 minutes! I can do them in about 15 minutes or so in my own living room.
Now you can relax knowing your house is tidy and company ready! I love knowing my guest won't be brushing crumbs off the sofa or going home with clothes full of cat hair and lint! #RollAwayLint

Your living room is beautiful! These are wonderful tips, even though many of our kids have moved away, we still have too much clutter. With 3 dogs and a cat, I should buy stock in lint rollers. We use them all the time, including on the furniture.

Hi Beth! Thank you! I think with or without children it's still a challenge at times to keep things uncluttered. Of course once you have pets you might as well count them as children ?. My husband says that all the time too, because we use lint roller's a lot around here. Especially when I'm using my white slipcover ?.

Ah, I struggle with keeping the living room clean, especially with a new puppy. This lint roller sounds great for all of the hair I keep finding on the couch. I love the idea of baskets or something to hide the clutter too!

With pets it's always a challenge keeping clean, right?! We have a lot of baskets! It's a wonderful way to help corral stuff that would otherwise be laying out like books and toys! ??

Linda-- Your house is absolutely lovely! I have the same couch in my tv room and I love how you have all of the fun plaid pillows on it for the season! Very fun. And thank you for all of the great tips...those baskets are so smart! #client

I think the key is cleaning regularly and keeping up with the clutter. A lint roller and a quick pass of the vacuum can only pick up so much, and you can only stuff things in baskets if there is room for it. It's also important to teach kids to put their things away when they are done with them. I get a twitch when I go in a house with toys scattered everywhere.

Hi Jessica, I think you might have missed the point of this post. Also, even when I do my regular cleaning, I still use my lint roller to freshen up my sofa, pillows, lampshade, etc... ??
Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment.

I'm sorry if my comment didn't come across well. I just meant that you obviously do a great job of keeping up with your house. Not everyone could get ready for company so quickly, but you did give some great tips.
